Oil of sweet basil is employed quite extensively in all kinds of flavors, including those for confectionery, baked goods and condimentary products (chilli sauces cat sups, tomato pates, pickles, fancy vinegars) & in spiced meals, sausages, etc. The oil serves certain dental imparting destination to flavors in certain dental & oral products.

Sweet basil oil has its place in certain perfume compounds, for the scenting of soaps the lower priced Reunion oil is preferable.

Acorus calamus

(Vernmacular Name: BOJHO)

Parts used: rhizomes


As an aromatic stimulant, bitter tonic and expectorant. It is used for the treatment of the following disorders; stomach disorders, diarrhea, dysentery, asthma, common cold, whooping cough, intestinal worms, mouth disorders jaundice, liver disorder. It is also used as for sore throat and voice sharpner.

Antimicrobial, cardiac stimulant, digestive, stomachic and flavoring agent. The    essential oil is rich in cinnamic aldehydes.


Rhododendron anthopogon D. Don. (Anthopogon Oil)

Parts used: Aerial parts of the shrub


The essential oil is used in perfumery, cosmetics and as a flavoring agent. The leaves are used as stimulant and also widely used in monasteries as an ingredient of  incense sticks.

In perfumes such as oriental bases, heavy floral, fougeres, woody bases, animal-ambre types etc.; in flavors as a modifier for valerian hop, ginger, calamus, cardamom, etc. As an antispasmodic, diuretic, emmenagogue, nervine tonic, carminative, deobstruent, digestive stimulant.

In fragrance and flavor industry (especially flavoring high grade tobacco) and locally used in various skin diseases.

The essential oil (Wintergreen oil) is used as flavoring agent in the confectionery industry and in the manufacture of soft drinks; it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry (for its analgesic property) and the perfumery industry.


Zanthoxylum armatum D. C.

(Vernacular name: TIMOOR)

Parts used: Fruits, bark and seeds.


The essential oil (Himalayan pepper) from the fruits is used in the fragrance and flavor industry as it is rich in linalool and also contains limonene, methyl cinnamate and cineol. The bark and seeds are aromatic tonic used to treat fever, indigestion, and cholera. The fruits are used to heal toothache and other disease of the teeth. In Ayurvedic medicine, the drug is also used for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis.

(Vernacular name: DHUPI)

Parts used: berries


The berries or fruits are used as stomachic, diuretic, emmenagogue, carminative, stimulant and in cutaneous diseases. The essential oil is used as antiseptic and in flavoring beverages such as rich Gin etc.

Eucalyptus leaves are used as an astringent; they have also been employed in the farm of cigarette for asthma. The volatile oil has antiseptic properties.


Cymbopogon martini

Vernacular Name: (PALMOROSA)

At one time the oil was used as an adulterant of Bulgarian or Turkish rose oil. Today palmarosa oil is the source of the very high-grade of geranoil. The oil is widely employed in cosmetics particularly in soaps, to which it imparts a pronounced and lashing rose note: Geraniol, the chief constituents of palmarosa oil, being quite alkali resistant, the acts stands up well in soaps.


Another use of Palmarosa oil is in the flavoring of tobacco.


Cymbopogon flexuosus

Because of its powerful lemon like odor, oil of lemongrass is used widely for the scenting of soaps, detergents and all kinds of technical products. The bulk of the oil, however, is employed for the isolation of citral, which as such, is used in flavors cosmetics and perfumes, or is converted into ionones, a group of very important synthetic aromatic possessing a strong and lasting violet odor.

As the starting material for the preparation of ionones, oil of lemongrass has become one of the most important and indispensable essential oils in the course of the past fifty years. This applies to the East Indian, as well as the West Indian type of lemongrass oil. Large quantities of β-ionone are now employed for the manufacture of synthetic vitamin A.
